Hyundai sets production record at Alabama auto plant
Workers at Hyundai's Alabama auto factory built a record number of vehicles in April, breaking the previous monthly production record set in October.
Last month, the plant turned out 18,776 Sonata sedans and 18,596 Elantra compacts, for a total of 37,372 vehicles.
The plant implemented a third shift last year to keep pace with demand for the popular cars. The Elantra is Hyundai's top U.S. seller while the Sonata is No. 2.
In April, sales of the Elantra rose 45 percent over the year-ago period but sales of the Sonata fell 22 percent. Hyundai officials have cited limited inventory of the Sonata as a reason behind its slowing sales.
