Hyundai Exec Confirms 2014 Genesis Sedan World Premiere at Detroit Auto Show
We knew from a variety of sources, including Hyundai CEO Kim Choon-ho, that the new generation of the Genesis sedan would land in dealerships next year, but now, the Korean carmaker has provided a precise date for the world premiere of its luxury mid-size sedan via Brandon Ramirez, senior group manager of product planning with Hyundai Motor America.
"You will see the Genesis at the Detroit auto show," Ramirez told Edmunds. Next year's edition of the North American International Auto Show, which is the official name for the event, takes place from January 13 to 26.
While Ramirez avoided getting into any more details about the car, scoop pictures tell the design story of the new Genesis, which will use certain styling elements from the HCD-14 Concept car displayed at this year's Detroit motor show.
Another highlight will be the introduction of an all-wheel drive option for the first time in the model's (relatively brief) history, and at some point, the availability of a ten-speed automatic transmission.

Car Tip of the Week: Clean dash gauges carefully!
Use a soft damp cloth to lightly wipe dust from the clear plastic lenses on your dashboard. Too much pressure will scratch them. Too many scratches can make it difficult to read your gauges under certain lighting conditions.

Next-gen Hyundai Genesis reveals new skin on 'Ring
The launch of the next-generation Hyundai Genesis is drawing closer and closer, and this latest set of spy shots gives us our best look yet at the Korean automaker's new sedan. Caught testing on the Nürburgring, we're not only getting a better look at the finer details of the Hyundai's exterior, but this set of photos gives us a clear view inside the cockpit, as well.
For its new generation, the Hyundai Genesis appears to be moving a bit more upmarket in terms of materials and layout, with a redesigned steering wheel, gauge cluster and center stack. The current car's analog clock appears to be left intact, smack dab in the middle of the heating and cooling controls, but the rest of the updates look decidedly more modern and, if we're honest, a bit German.
Outside, it's obvious that the new Hyundai will wear a more aggressive front fascia, along with what appears to be a more rakish rear deck. Earlier reports have stated that the next Genesis will be much lighter than the current car, and with a much more sporty tune to the suspension. We'll know more when the car is officially revealed, though it's still unclear exactly when that will be.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport Named One of Ward’s 10 Best Interiors
The all-new 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport’s upscale and highly-functional interior was acknowledged by the editors of WardsAuto, which named it to this year’s Ward’s 10 Best Interiors list. This recognition follows the 2012 Accent and 2012 Azera being named to the list last year.
“The latest version of the Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is the
essence of a midsize family CUV: well-crafted, tastefully appointed and
affordable, despite a decidedly upscale look and feel,” said Tom Murphy,
executive editor, WardsAuto. “Hyundai is consistently delivering excellent
interiors that reinforce the brand’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design language.”
WardsAuto editors have been studying the vehicles since
February, selecting the 10 winners from a field of 46 vehicles with new or
significantly refreshed interiors. The selection process mimics that of the
Ward’s 10 Best Engines competition, in which editors rate vehicles based on
their daily commutes in and around metro Detroit. Unlike 10 Best Engines, the
interior competition has no price cap.
“The all-new Santa Fe Sport offers buyers a comfortable,
functional and modern-looking interior,” said Christopher Chapman, chief
designer, Hyundai Design North America. “Designed with families in mind, the
interior features quality materials, intuitive controls and a spacious layout
for the diverse needs of today’s active families.”
“The instrument panel is defined by its sculptural center
vents from which the flowing form develops,” said Christopher Zarlenga, design
manager of Santa Fe’s interior. “Color is also an important differentiator for
the interior, emphasizing the wing shape outward from the center stack through
the doors.”
During the selection process editors pay close attention to
fit-and-finish, checking to see if seams are straight and match up cleanly on
armrests and instrument panels. Editors climb in and out of back seats and
third rows in larger CUVs and SUVs to check overall comfort levels, headroom
and legroom. Another increasingly important category is driver information.
Bluetooth® phone links are commonplace, so editors connect their smartphones
and experiment with voice-activation systems.
Santa Fe Sport features a flowing interior look, designed
for passenger functionality and comfort. From the heated rear seats and
available eight-way power driver seat, to a standard 40:20:40 folding-rear seat
back, the vehicle boasts flexibility and a comfortable cabin for all
passengers. Also standard on all Santa Fe models with cloth seating is a YES
Essentials® seat fabric treatment that provides soil-resistant, anti-odor and
anti-static properties for added longevity and livability. Special care and attention
went into other interior details, such as an optional panoramic sunroof, which
allows more natural light into the cabin, and premium window switch trim.
Available on 2.4-liter models and standard on Turbo models is a push-button
starter with proximity key and an electrochromatic gauge cluster color LCD
screen. A heated steering wheel and sliding second row seats are optional
first-class touches on Santa Fe Sport.
The 2013 interior winners will be honored during the
WardsAuto Interiors Conference on May 22 at The Henry hotel in Dearborn, Mich.
An extensive package profiling the winners is available on WardsAuto.com and in
the May issue of WardsAuto World magazine.

Hyundai unveils E4U, an EV with eggs, at Seoul Motor Show
Despite modern advancements in sneaker technology, walking
remains a slow way to go. Running, however, achieves acceptable velocity, but
even with a smoothie made by Lance Armstrong, we tire quickly. The Segway never
truly caught on for those not on government payrolls and, let’s face it,
skateboards went out of fashion shortly after the first "Back to the
Future."
Hyundai decided it’s time to change all this, and at the
Seoul Motor Show, its engineers unveiled a moveable egg concept that promises
speeds faster than a Segway, and a strange helmet that makes you look far
cooler than any skateboarder could ever dream.
The egg is entitled the E4U – standing for Egg, Evolution,
Electricity and Eco-friendliness. The result of an annual invention contest
among Hyundai engineers in South Korea, the odd-egg was designed as a potential
future of personal mobility: It can travel up to speeds just shy of 20 mph,
weighs 176 lbs. (sounds mobile to me), and boasts a 24V battery attached to a 500W
electric motor.
The steering appears to be controlled somewhat akin to the
Segway, with an abundance of tilting, pivoting, and other unnatural behaviors
required to induce motion.
According to tech site Nikkei Tech-On, who witnessed a
demonstration in Seoul, the E4U stands on semispherical balls. The driver
(rider?) must tilt the egg to move, but it appears to be in a rather
counterintuitive way: you move forward by putting weight on your left foot,
backwards by transferring the weight to your right foot, and left and right by
tilting backwards and forwards respectively. Tech-On mentioned the driver
stated, “Without some practice, it does not move in the desired direction.”
Hyundai make a point of emphasizing the streamlined stance
of the E4U, because, you know, aerodynamics play a large role at speeds as high
as 18 mph. Perhaps the best feature is the helmet, however. It appears to be
your regular bicycle helmet with a clear plastic screen draped over the
driver’s face; presumably to prevent bug splatter while maximizing operator
shame.

Hyundai's rakish HND-9 concept has lots of Seoul
Hyundai has unwrapped the HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept at the
2013 Seoul Motor Show. The design study is intended to give the world a glimpse
at what Hyundai has planned for the look of its future products – an evolution
of the automaker's current Fluidic Sculpture design language.
With classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive proportions, the
HND-9 looks great, and engineers graced the concept with a 3.3-liter
turbocharged, direct-injection engine good for 364 horsepower. An eight-speed
automatic transmission shuttles that thrust to the rear wheels, while touches
like butterfly doors give the machine a bit of flair.
Indoors, the HND-9 features seats built with a special mesh
that changes colors depending on the viewer's angle. Designers modeled the
cabin after a cockpit for a close, sporty feel. You can check out the full
press release below for more information.
